It’s been a while since the last Silverlight UK User Group, so I’m pleased to announce that we will hoping to squeeze in an evening before we kick off a new year. After the release of Silverlight 4 and the passing of the PDC2010, the Silverlight scene has been reasonably quiet, probably due to the attention that Windows Phone 7 and HTML5 (in the guise of the IE9 Beta) have been receiving. So, keeping to truer form with Silverlight in a web scenario, I’m delighted that SharePoint MVP, Dave McMahon will be making a trip south from the West Midlands and introducing us to the realm of Silverlight as a mechanism to bring Business Intelligence to life. As I write this, much of the UK is snowed-in with unseasonal weather for early December – despite the transport networks coming to a standstill over the last couple of days, I hope that the weather clears up sufficiently that Dave can have a smooth journey south for the evening!
I’d also take the opportunity to recommend that you tune into the Silverlight Firestarter event on December 2nd; for which you can register to attend ‘virtually’. The keynote for the day will be made by Scott Guthrie and I think he will clarify one of the hottest topics post-PDC which was the current direction and focus of Silverlight and it’s positioning within the Microsoft technology space with the introduction of HTML5. If you missed the background to this concern then read the blog posts of the Silverlight Team, Mike Taulty, Laurent Bugnion and Tim Heuer – they’ll reaffirm Microsoft’s commitment and positioning of Silverlight and HTML5.

“Building a Silverlight BI Dashboard”
with Dave McMahon
Bringing together a bunch of the latest technologies to make a SharePoint site come alive is an exciting process and this is exactly what Ridgian did with one of their clients who wanted a BI solution integrated with mapping technology. Blending a mix of SharePoint / Silverlight / Bing Maps / PRISM Framework / Analysis Services / Reporting Services / Performance Point Server together to produce a stunning set of visuals for the users to work with. This solution is now a flagship system for the client who themselves plan to ‘sell’ their services through it and to expand it into all areas of their organisation. In this session Dave McMahon of Ridgian and SharePoint MVP, will discuss the integration issues encountered and solved when blending third-party mapping solutions with custom built Silverlight controls, built using the PRISM framework..
Please register and I hope to see you there!
Want to join the discussion?
The event is geared to please/interest/inform both developers and designers alike, so if you are interested in coming along then please contact either myself or Michelle Flynn (here) and we will be glad to take your details.
Want to present or showcase?
We are always on the lookout for presenters for future sessions – whether it be a high or low level coding walk through, a workflow perspective or showcase demo. If you think that you have a topic/presentation that ought to be shared with the community then please contact me (here) and I’ll see if I can get you scheduled in!
|This is a cross post from my EMC blog, mainly for backup duplicity and to aggregate some of my past postings. My EMC blog used to be under the Conchango brand but was acquired by EMC so I’ve also retrospectively refreshed some of the old links and maybe a tweak a bit of content too.
